21st Annual Mountains of Misery Challenge Century

Course Info: 

Mountains of Misery is a challenging bike ride for dedicated road cyclists through the heart of southwest Virginia. The annual timed event features century (100+ mi) and double-metric century (200 km/124+ mi) options—both ending in a tough, four-mile 12%–16% graded climb to the finish.

  • The Challenge Century is 104 miles, with 10,000′ of climbing.
  • The Double Metric Century is 200 kilometers, or 125 miles, with over 13,000′ of climbing

Registration:  

Registration opens for everyone at midnight on February 1st, 2018. With a limit of 600 riders, this event can fill up quickly. It is highly recommended that you sign up immediately to ensure you get a spot. There will be no waitlist! 

There will be no refunds for any reason. Participants may defer their entry to this race in 2019. Thank you for understanding. You may defer until May 22nd, 2018. 

Packet Pick-up & Check-In:

  • Saturday, May 26th: 2:00–7:00pm, East Coasters Bike Shop, 1400 South Main St., Suites 3 and 4, Blacksburg, VA (Rain location will be Blacksburg Aquatic Center, Patrick Henry Drive. Call (540) 250-1220 or (540) 230-3019 if the weather is questionable).
  • Sunday, May 27th: 5:15–6:15am, Newport Recreation Center, Newport, VA

Wave Start:

The first wave will start at exactly 7:00am There will be 6 waves with approximately 100 riders per wave. Only Double Metric Riders will start in the first wave. Waves will leave Newport five minutes apart. If you would like to start with friends, create a team so you all can be together! All riders will be chipped timed at the start line and at the finish line.

Accommodations:

Mountain Lake Lodge: Stay at the Finish! Memorial Day Weekend accommodations for Mountains of Misery participants at the newly renovated lodge for $99 plus taxes, you can add a grab-and-go continental breakfast on race day for $7.50 per person. All overnight guest also pay a $10 parking fee per night. Two-night minimum required, please call 540-626-7121 to reserve.

The Inn at Virginia Tech                                                                                                     Mountains of Misery participants can take advantage of a special weekend rate at the Inn at Virginia Tech. Parking:

Please plan to arrive by 6:15 in order to park and check-in. First arrivers should proceed to Lot 1 (ballfield) and park there. Lot 2 will be filled next (Newport Recreation Center), followed by Lots 3 and 4. All parking is within .5 miles of the Recreation Center where shuttle service is located. There is also shuttle service from each parking area to the Recreation Center, beginning at 10:30am. 
Note: There is no event parking at the finish area at Mountain Lake. Please take the shuttle up to watch the finish and back down to the Recreation Center.

Shuttle Service:

From Newport Rec Center to Mountain Lake: Begins at 10:30 a.m., continuing every 20 minutes as needed.
From Mountain Lake to Newport Rec Cemter: Begins at 11 a.m., continuing every 20 minutes as needed.

Awards:

Finisher T-Shirt. Only riders who finish the whole course will receive the Coveted Long Sleeve Finishers T-Shirt

Rest Stops: 

There are eight rest stops for Century riders and ten for the Double Metric, approximately every 10–15 miles throughout the course. All rest stops will have food, water, sodas, Gatorade/HEED/Or other endurance drink, Hammer Gel, Endurolytes, and Port-A-Johns. Some rest stops will have tools.

Support and Gear (SAG): 

SAG, Mechanical Support, and HAM vehicles will be roaming the course, and HAM will be stationed at every rest stop. For assistance, give a “thumbs down” signal. SAG and Mechanical Support will have yellow flags and lights for identification, and HAM (communication) will have identification marks on the vehicle windows.

If you have any problems along the route please notify SAG, HAM or Rest Stops immediately.
No personal SAG vehicles are allowed. If we discover you have a personal SAG vehicle, your finish time will not be recorded or posted.

Photos:

If you wish to purchase event photos they will be available within one week after the race. A link will be sent via email. Event photos will be available on the TriAdventure Facebook page approximately one month after the event.

Post Race Meal:

Catered by Mountain Lake. Sandwiches, salads, chips, dessert, and drinks.

FROM BLACKSBURG:
The Recreation Center is approximately nine (9) miles from the center of Blacksburg, VA.

  • Head west on US-460. Turn right onto VA-42 at Newport.
  • Follow VA-42 east through the center of Newport, and as you are heading out of Newport, the Newport Recreation Center will be on your right (approximately 0.8 mi from 460.

The Newport Recreation Center (former Newport High School) is a large brick building.

FROM GILES COUNTY:
The Rec. Center is approximately ten (10) miles from the center of Pembroke, VA.

  • Head east on US-460. Turn left onto VA-42 at Newport.
  • Follow VA-42 east through the center of Newport, and as you are heading out of Newport, the Newport Recreation Center will be on your right (approximately 0.8 mi from 460.

Spectators:

Spectators are allowed at the Start and Finish Lines only. Spectators are not allowed to park along the route. State Police will be policing the route and asking motorists standing or parking along the route to please move.

Weather:

Mountains Of Misery weather can change throughout the race. Be prepared for anything. Some years the heat will be stifling and some years you will want to start out in your jacket and arm warmers, only to warm up significantly as the day goes on. Thunderstorms are not common, but can happen. The average temperature for this time of year is 80 degrees, but the finish line area at Mountain Lake is always cooler.
